Working within a noir canon pushed me to treat genre not as stylization, but as a coordinate system where tone and meaning are held by the precision of rules. It also made clear that a producer’s influence on creative decisions only works in sync with the director. For that to happen, genre boundaries become a shared artistic language, and an entry point into cinema’s historical code.
